Bert Berg doing a handstand on a pile of soil

Hi, I'm Bert Berg, a circus artist.

Together with audiences, I create worlds and experiences that we collectively dive into. My work leans mainly on hand balancing, dance, physical theatre, object theatre, and performance art. Under this list of labels, there is work like: a zen garden of over 2500 mousetraps, a spastic acrobatic journey in a Dogville living room, star constellations made out of trash, a departure from thought embodied by a choreography based on Butoh principles and much more.

In 2013, I started busking as a fire-breathing juggler on different streets, squares and festivals. Around 2014, the École de Cirque de Bruxelles helped me to use the circus as a pedagogical tool to reach young adults and others. After this followed an intense 2 years in Granada at the circus and theatre school CAU, which gave me a well-funded base and love for dance, physical theatre and hand balancing. From there on I have practiced in different cities in Europe. The LIDO at Toulouse and DOCH at Stockholm contributed the most to my personal journey, giving me the privilege to study alongside their official program. Over the years, I have developed a personal language on stage and in my practice. It has been nourished by many solo pieces, side projects, touring, residencies, and an elaborate hand balancing practice. For more details on my history, have a look at my CV below.

In 2017, I created an act called A Sensitive Case, which became a longer piece and then a subject of research, before it became a full show linked to a mousetraps sculpting practice. Sensitive Case & A Sensitive Build both premiered in 2021. A Sensitive Case sold out 20 times that summer at Zomer van Antwerpen. Both works are still touring.

2024 will bring the creation of a new project called Extricate, together with composer and artist Tomas Vanderplaetse. Keep your ears open for that one.
